On Marianna Martines, 18th Century Viennese composer
Judith Valerie Engel | Concert Pianist, Musicologist
Judith Valerie Engel is an internationally acclaimed Austrian concert pianist and musicologist currently working as a DPhil researcher at the University of Oxford. Her work centres around the intersection of gender studies and music.
Judith will speak about her research on the 18th century Viennese composer Marianna Martines of whom she is one of the leading scholars and performers. At the heart of the talk lie questions of identity politics; systemic issues of class and gender; accessible spaces to women in this socio-political context, such as the salon, a liminal space bridging the gap between public and private; as well as dominant narratives that (mis-)shaped the reception history of the historical person of Marianna Martines.
